My internship experience was unusual, due to Brazilian economic circumstance, but fulfilled since in this program I could learn a lot of aspects that we do not learn in the university. Before this internship program, I had already worked out of the record, helping my father in bank services, cleaning the shop, etc, but formally it was the first time. Therefore on March, 19th 1990, Monday, my first day of work, I was jubilant. My expectation to do an outstanding job was very high. However, when I got there I figured out that something did not add up. It was hard to grasp what was happening. The atmosphere was excrucitaing adverse. The staff was distressed because there were already rumors about lay offs. The reason was the “Plano Collor” that was implemented the Friday before.
In this depicted scenario I began my internship program decided to execute well the target determined by the boss. For instance, he asked me to do a computer program to control the employees’ extra time, even though I had never worked or studied computer language. After a hard time working, reading books, making tests, asking my colleagues, etc., I got it. The final result was well received by my boss because he wanted to have this tool a long time. Before the program it was made manually.
The “Plano Collor” failed aggravating the economic situation. The company had to make reorganization in order to face the crises. This reorganization included lay offs, however I was not fired. On the contrary, in January 1991, I was promoted as an analyst. My boss explained that it occurred due to the fact that besides of an unfriendly environment, I kept focused on my task, demonstrating a pro active approach. He mentioned that all my tasks were well done exemplifying the extra-time program that I had done.
The lesson that I took from this event is that, at any rate, no matter the environment people are facing, the important is to be focused on the job, doing always the best, acting proactively, and thinking outside of the box. Lessons like this we do not have in the university, only the experience teach us.

Nowadays, the consumption of alcohol by the teens has been increasing by leaps and bounds rate. In Brazil, the Instituto da Droga e Toxicodependência (IDT) claimed that the rate has risen from 30% in 2001 to 40% in 2007. In the United States, the use of alcohol is associated with teen’s death: according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2001, the car accidents involving teens was its main cause.
Teen access to booze without bound is a problem that has not been treated with due attention, mainly because the society has a penchant for accepting the consumption of alcohol as a normal fact. It is not considered as harmful as the other drugs. For instance, the advertising of beer is associated with happiness. It always presents health and beautiful people in pleasurable moments, but its consequences are never shown. Another example is a nonsense fact in which some fathers incentives their sons to drink only to “become a man”.
For the adolescents, it is extremely excruciating since they are more vulnerable to the action of alcohol in their minds. Their brains are still in formation. As a consequence there is an increase of the chance of having a mental disorder disease in the future. This fact, associated with inexperience is responsible for the enhancement of the accidents. The free access to booze is the first step for the teens to become an addict as an adult. According to Associação Brasileira de Estudos do Álcool e outras Drogas (Abead) the earlier is the consumption, greater is the probability of dependency.
For this reason, it is necessary to make the population think over about this issue. Campaigns should be made targeted on the consequences of the earlier consumption of alcohol. The government can contribute classifying alcohol in the same category of tobacco with a more strict control, applying the legislation effective, punishing who do not accomplish it. Also the authorities could considerer it as a public health problem, giving special attention that it deserves. Last but not least, the parents should warn their children about the risks that they are taken. An open discussion is also about this issue, since in order to be accepted by the group they are sometimes forced to consume alcohol. At any rate, if some of these measures were adopted, we would have at least the beginning of the solution of a problem that our society has been facing for a long time.

In 1990 when Fernando Collor assumed the presidency, Brazil was in a hyperinflation scenario. On March 16th (Friday) Plano Collor, was implemented. It was known as “confiscation plan”. Under this scenario, March 19th 1990 (Monday) was my first day of the internship program. When I went there, the company’s atmosphere was not good. There was already gossip about demission. It was just my first day and had already comments about demission.
At that day the president of the company did a meeting with all employees in order to clarify the company’s position at that moment.
For me I had no choice. My decision was to do my best despite of the situation.
Plano Collor failed and the economic situation aggravated.
In August, when I went to the company, I observed that there were a lot of people in front of the building, among them my 3 colleagues, internship as me. They sad that many people were dismissed. All the internship was as well. I went to the office, cleaned my desk, took all my particular objects and waited for my boss to call me. I was ready for my dismissal.
He called me and explained that the reorganization was happening in order to face the crises. However, since I demonstrated pro activity, all my tasks were well done, etc. the company counted on me to face that new challenge. I felt fulfilled in that moment.
In an unfriendly environment, I learned the importance of being focused on the work and doing the best. We need to be far from the negative comments despite of the situation. This lesson is valid until now. I am applying just know when I am in a merger process. The company that I work was bought by another.

Mauro #2 – Birth Order

May 13, 2009

Birth order influence our personality. As of a novelty, generally the first one receives more attention. Additionally, the parents does not have any experience in how to take care of a child. The acquired experience will be used only to a second child on.  Otherwise, for some culture, he will be more demanded, just because he is the oldest. The eldest is considered the one that will continue the family.

I am the eldest of a Japanese family descendant. I considered myself more responsible and independent thanks of the way I was educated.

For instance, when I decided to come to Sao Paulo alone, my father was for. He believed that this fact would be good for me, to make me responsible and independent. His support was very important. In fact, it changed completly my life.

Intentionally or not, cultural reason or not, the parents give different treatment and education to their chilren which influency their future personality and character.
