When people decide to work at home, they will avoid spending time on traffic. By having more free time, they can plan better what they are going to do along the day. Also, designing their on schedule can result in more productive work. Last year, I decided to work from home in Butantã, because I was spending too much time in traffic to get to work downtown, and that was causing me problems to get to my appoitments on time. Once, I had a meeting with a writer at 8:00 a.m., and even waking up early, I got late for the meeting and I lost the oppotunity to get to know the writer and his work. From that day on, I decided to schedule an inportant meeting at my house or nearby, like  at a coffee shop, for instance. Therefore, working at home can be more productive in terms of using the time that they spend in traffic jam in a more efficient way.

The role of cosmetic surgery in the world we live in today is to benefit both young and old people emotionally, physically and psychologically.

First, cosmetic surgeries can help people overcome their emotional traumas. Normally, a person decides to undergo a plastic surgery to fix a feature that is irregular on his or her body. However, the benefits of cosmetic surgeries go even further. For instance, a 19-year-old boy called Flávio Soares suffered from an emotional trauma as a child because of the rudeness of his colleagues, and the teasing he used to receive at school due to his huge nose size. He didn’t need psychological assistence because his mother made him realize that nobody is physically perfect in this world. And after having undergone plastic surgery, Flávio became a different man because it was such a boost to his self-esteem, which could be felt by everybody around him. Thus, cosmetic surgery can help people boost their self-confidence by overcoming emotional traumas.

Second, cosmetic surgery can help people overcome their physical traumas by bringing normalcy to something that is not perfect in his or her body. Plastic surgery does not only make a person more outgoing, but it can also help  improve his or her physical condition. For example, a 20-year-old young woman called Luciana Ribeiro started practicing exercises only after her breast reduction surgery. Luciana had been avoiding physical exercises during her whole life before the surgery because she never felt comfortable wearing tight clothes and due to the pain she felt on her back because of the weight from her breasts. And now, she goes to the gym every single day wearing as little clothing as possible to practice exercises and be admired by her friends for the beauty of her body. Thus,  cosmetic surgeries can help people overcome their physical traumas by bringing normalcy to their body’s imperfection.

Finally, cosmetic surgery can help people recover from their psychological traumas. The benefits of cosmetic surgery are felt throughout any age group. Older people have found a resource  in cosmetic surgery that psychologically makes them feel younger. For instance, my mother was very depressed because of the aging effects on her face. And she thought that because of this, she was not able to find a boyfriend.  After undergoing a face lift, she got the vitality of her appearance back and started feeling so attractive that she found a boyfriend many years younger than she was. Besides that cosmetic surgery can help people recover from their phycological trauma and to concentrate on areas that are really important to them, draining away their valuable mental energy, for years.

It is a challenge for students to choose an area of study at the university. They must seek appropriate information on the profession, search for the possibilities of affordable colleges, and do not allow themselves to be influenced by their parent´s desire.

First, having appropriate information on the profession is a key element in chosing an area of study. It is very important for students to know more details about their future profession, like the main activities that the profession involves, difficulties in getting a job, and salary range. And the best way to get this information is to ask the professionals in the specific areas. In Arujá, the main private school has a program through which the students can visit companies and spend one day as an intern. The director of the school claims that the program is a success because becoming part of it is not an obligation, but all the students get involved and confess that the such program helps them choose their future profession. Therefore, to get to know their future profession in more depth is an important step in choosing an area of study.

Second, when students are in the process of chosing a profession, they have to search the possibilities of colleges are more financially apropriate for them. One important analysis that the students have to do when they are choosing an area of study is how much the course in each college they intend to apply for costs. According to the Teaching Departament in Brazil (Hummm, what does it really mean? Grace, even if you are inventing the name, you would need to make it more realistic; otherwise, your text loses credibility), students give up on college because they don´t have the financial conditions to go through the entire course. Therefore, when chosing an area of study it is important to search for alternatives of colleges in terms of costs.

Last, the choice made by the students about an area of study shouldn´t be influenced by their parent´s desire. One difficulty in choosing an profession is to do it based on what they really want despite their parent´s desire. I grew up believing (Grace, is this where you stopped in your composition in class?)

Companies should advertise their products no matter if they are new realeases or old ones in order to increase their sales. Advertizing is the best way to get consumers’ attention to buy the product. Products that are old in the market are well known by the consumer; however, if the company spends sometime without making any advertisement of such a product, the consumer may change to another branch that is investing in ads, showing how eficient their products are.  (You need an example of this idea of renewing old prodcuts.) On the other hand, if a company wants to lauch a new product on the market, the company should be worried about what kind of ads they will design to impress consumers in order to buy their products.  The secret to have profits in a company is to use advertizing to convince people that a product is more efficient and more economic than the other.  According to Joao de Castro, sales director of “OMO”, he says that products that maintain their advertisements are the ones that the company has more profits from. Whenever the company stops investing in advertizing, consumers switch to another branch that advertises more than they doTherefore, consumers prefer to use what they call  “the product of the time”.  It doesn’t matter if it is new or old in the market. What matters is that it is in the midia. (Where is your concluding sentence?)

Claudia,

This paper has a lot of potential to become a great essay. However, this assignment is supposed to be only a paragraph. And for this paper to be a paragraph, you can only have ONE major idea. You will have to choose between addressing the issue of OLD products OR NEW ones. Because you decide to keep both, you will need two paragraphs with two topic sentences, two explanations, two examples, and two concluding sentences.

Also, this paper has problems with content. For the old products, you stopped at the explanation part. Where are the example and the concluding sentence?

As far as structure goes, you mentioned in your topic sentence NEW and OLD. But when you started the explanation, you addressed the OLD and then the NEW. You cannot do that. When your thesis or topic sentence present your ideas in a certain order, you MUST address those ideas in THAT order.

As far as vocabulary goes, you also need to use more sophisticated vocabulary words. Most of your words are very simple. Maybe using your old folders from previous courses like Conversation 1 and or Dimensions in Reading should help.

You grammar also needs some brushing up. You have made some very basic grammar errors, most of which were due to lack of attention. I am sure that if you had reread your paper before posting it, you would have corrected many of your mistakes yourself. But another concern is the sophistication of your grammar. Most of your sentences are quite simple (SUBJECT + VERB + COMPLEMENT), and you would need to try more complex grammatical structures such as sentences starting with ALTHOUGH, EVEN THOUGH, etc.

Your mechanics also needed some revision. You have mispelled a couple of simple words due to lack of attention. Maybe you should get into the habit of REREADING your pieces before you submit them for a grade :)

Interchange is considered to be very good for people because it’s a great way to boost the foreign vocabulary, to know a little bit more about other cultures and it can help people be more independent.

First, going on interchange is a great way to boost the foreign vocabulary. Usually, when a teen goes on interchange, he/she continues to have classes at the new country that he/she arrived. In order to have those classes, it’s necessary to manage a lot of English, for example, so that the teen can at least understand something about each subject. Spending 6 months or a year abroad means that you are definitely going to learn a lot about the new vocabulary, because you’re going to use it for everything you might need, such as ordering food, interacting with new friends and asking for information.  The more time spent in this new country, the more your vocabulary will improve, not only because it’s necessary to know every word, but also because some people can get very keen on learning more things about another culture. I have a friend who has just came back from New Zealand and before going on this trip, she could barely speak fluent English and now that she is back, her English is completely fluent. Since she stayed there having classes in high-school, her accent has also improved a lot, because the English language has become something totally necessary for her in her routine. That’s why going on interchange will defenitly improve your foreign language skills.

Second, going on interchange can also make people get more interested about other cultures. One of the biggest reasons  people, and not only teens, go on interchange is to get to know something more about another culture (their eating, dressing and free time habits). A good example about a place, with a complete different culture than Brazil to visit is China. If someone thinks that the Chinese people only eat the Chinese food that we are used to eat here in Brazil, he/she is wrong. My father’s friend went to China a couple of months ago and told me and my family, that their culture is completely different from ours. He said that Chinese women wear a different kind of outfit than we are used to wear here in Brazil, because they usually wear “kimonos”. Another difference is that they not only eat the regular Chinese food that we see here in Brazil, they also eat insects, monkeys and sometimes snakes. Also, instead of using forks and knifes, they use chopsticks. They are also very different from Brazilians in the way they go from one place to another. Instead of using cars, they use bicycles to avoid the air pollution. Those are only a few differences from their culture to ours and a nice way to get to know them better, is visiting China. That’s why going on interchange will make you find out a little bit more about a different culture.

Finally, going on interchange can also make a person become more independent. People usually go on interchange all by themselves, which is a great oportunitty to help them becoming more independent. Arriving alone in a new country with a complete different culture than yours is not an easy task for a teenager. At first it can be very daunting for a teen, but it is something that he/she will have to go through all by him/her self, which will definitely turn him/her into a more mature and independent person, since they will have to tackle all of their problems and mind their own business without their parents help. A very good friend of mine is going through all of this. She recently moved to New York all by herself to go to University. She bought a tiny apartment for her and her roommate, who are having to take care of everything they need. My friends’ family decided to stay here because they didn’t want to leave everything they had earned behind and also because they thought it would be very good for their daughter to become a real woman without them interfering in her life. My friend told me that it’s not an easy job to manage everything alone and that she thought it would be a lot easier, but that she won’t give up her dream and she’ll keep on taking care of her on her own, because, according to her, it’s also an amazing way to prepare herself to raise kids in the future. That’s why going on interchange can make people be more independent.

The O.C is an amazing sitcom because it shows not only superficial things related to money, like clothes, cars, among other, but also reality that is lived by people that live in less afortunate cities. In the beginning, it may seem that the sitcom is all about wealthy, gorgeous and perfect people, but that’s not was it’s all about since it also shows the reality that people from dangerous and poor cities have to go though. In fact, one of the main characters, Ryan is born in one of those poor, poluted and gloomy places. Of course, the program shows scenes where Marissa and Summer, the rich, hot and spoiled girls are bad-tempered and the only solution to that seems to be shopping at the most expensive stores, but it also shows poverty and violence like in episode 2 where Ryan, the poor guy goes back to the house where he was abandoned by his mother and have flashbacks of his stepfather hitting him while drunk when he was only 8 years old, or how in front of his eyes her mother was raped. Even in Newport Beach where they’re all rich and seem to have perfect lives  Sometimes, the rich get drunk or high which are things that aren’t expected from that high social class. Therefore, I think The O.C is an stunning show.

Brazil isn´t ready to have a world champion in surfing. No doubt, Brazil is one of the best countrys in surf nowadays. We have a lot of surfers compieting in the WCT (World Championship Tour) and every year more and more brazilian surfers enter in the WCT and have a great qualification in the WQS (World Qualifing Series ), but australians, americans and hawaians have something that we don´t have : a world champion. The asnwer is not hard to find. Althought USA and Australia are developed countries and their surfers have much more sponsor support and receive more money, the brazilians waves are not as good as the World Championship waves, and the brazilians dont have the determination to improve to surf bigger waves. Adriano de Souza, for example, won easily the brazilian championship last year. No doubt, he is the best surfer in brazil, but in the World Tour, he cant achieve the same results. If he and other brazilian surfers worked on bigger waves and received more help by the sponsors, Brazil would be ready to have a world champion.

Written exams shouldn’t be given so much importance in schools because exams may not be one of the students major strengths, they may be given at a time the student isn’t feeling well,  and they don’t prove the students’ knowledge.

Tests may not be one of the students’ major strengths. Sometimes, someone is good at writing, sometimes at speaking, or at reading among others. After all, people are different and are not good at the same things (Lucia, this last sentence is a perfect example of what I was referring to. You need to make your sentences more sophisticated, like for example, “Schools should take into account the fact that students differ in terms of their learning styles, showing different strengths and weaknesses in several different academic areas.), the student may know everything about the issue, but when put in the paper the ideas may seem unclear. Let’s take me as an example, I’m not good in written exams but when it comes to speaking I can beat anyone, in 7th grade we had to read a book named “The Secret” and we had an exam I scored 10 out of 100, which was an absurd, because I had read the book, and some of my friends didn’t read it, as a matter of fact I was the one who had given them the plot, and they somehow managed to score more than me, so I went to my teacher and told her that I wasn’t happy with the results, so she gave me a second chance, this time I the exam would be oral, she was absolutely amazed by the way I told the story and I got the highest grade of the my whole class. All in all every person has his own flaws and qualities.

Exams may be at a time the student isn’t feeling well, it might seem ironic but the mood, health, and other things related to physical health and emotions as well interfere in the quality of the person’s work, if you’re told to write about a happy moment of yours when something bad has just occurred is going to be, beyond any doubt, much more difficult to write than when you’re happy. For instance, I have a friend, whose name is Alexia, she’s really good in Math her grades are always the best, but once we had a test and there wouldn’t be a makeup, she was feeling awfully sick but she had to go anyway, she couldn’t concentrate because she couldn’t help sneezing and coughing, eventhough she was one of the students that had most condition of passing she failed. So if exams are going to have that high value, at least that students could choose when to do them.

Exams don’t prove the students knowledge due to many things, it depends on the circumstances and the person, but exams have more importance than anything, mostly in High School, like mentioned before many things interfere in the way that the person is going to deal with the exam such as mood, health, education, the person’s affinities, to sum up not all intelligent people will have a satisfactory grades in their exams. Some scientist don’t agree with the I.Q test(it testes how high is a person’s level of intelligence), but when we were little, there was this kid, that couldn’t get a grade higher than the average, his parents were worried so they took him to the doctor, so that they could know why their son didn’t have the capacity, after the I.Q test if was proved that the kid, not only was normal, but he also had a higher level of intelligence than a normal kid of his age would have. Therefore, exams don’t prove anything about the person’s intelligence.

Written exams shouldn’t be given so much importance in Schools because exams might not be one of the students major strengths, exams may be at a time the student isn’t feeling well and exams don’t prove the students knowledge.

Parents should allow their children not to go to college if they don’t want to because teenagers should have the right to choose what is best for them, they should not be influence by their parents, and young people should be able to work in other areas if he or she decides not to pursue a university degree.

First, teenagers should have the right to choose if they want go to college or not. Most teenagers at the age of 17 already know what they do not want to do for the rest of their lives and only some of them know what they want to study. They are mature enough to know what is best for them, and because of that, they should have the right to choose whether or not they want to go to college. For instanceMaria Du Carmo Pereira da Silvia is a 17-year-old Brazilian teenager faced a myriad of problems with her family to decide what she was going to do after graduating from high school. Her parents thought that this was a huge decision of going or not to college and they thought that, because they raised her, they should have the right to choose what they thought was best for her.  Her father, Marcos thought that because he was the man in the house, he had the right to make this important decision for Maria. One day, Maria said that she had the right to choose what she thinks it is best for her because this decision will affect her whole life and she was mature enough to decides on that. After that, her family tried to understand her point of view and they let her choose whatever she wanted. Maria decided to work in a art gallery, and now she is very determined about what she wants for her life. She wants to open her own art gallery. Therefore, everyone should have the right to decide on whether or not they should go to the university or just try to decide which course they are going to take there because even young teenagers know what is best for them.

Second, it is not wise for parents to try to influence teenagers on their decision concerning going to college or not. A lot of parents try to interfere on their children decisions about what they are going to do after school. Many of them want their children to follow their footsteps on their career or they just want their kids to deal with their parents’ business. For instance, Rafaela de Almeida Castro is a 17 years old student that studies at Colégio Rio Branco. Her dream is to take an art course after graduation, but her parents are trying to influence her on this decision by telling her that, if she does that, she will starve to death. Ricardo Almeida Castro is Rafaela’s father and a doctor. His ambition is for his only daugther to go to medical school, and after that, work with him at the hospital. Rafaela does not want that for her future. First of all, because she is sick at the sight of blood. Second, she wants to be an art teacher for young children. After having had a lot of fights at home with her family, Rafaela has persuaded her parents that her decision would make her happy. It is awful when parents try to influence their children’s decision because doing what the parents want can make the person unhappy for the rest of his or her life.

Third, another reason why teens may not go to university right away is that there are some areas that a person can work without a university degree. Nowadays, it is very hard to find a job even for people who go to a university. However, there are some areas that a person can qualify without having a degree,  such as at a store, in a restaurant or in a hotel. For example, Fernanda Maciel Xavier is a 23-year-old woman who hated studying and going to school when she was a teenager. When she was 17 years old, she was sure of that she did not want to go to the university. After her graduation at her school, she began to search for a job. She sent her resumé to a lot of places such as restaurants, hotels, pubs, stores, children buffet and others. Only after 2 months, a store named Bob Store called her for an interview. She began to work there as a sales person, and after 5 years, she was promoted to manager of the store, and nowadays, she has her own store named Windsurf. Of course that to be promoted, she had to take several of courses to know better how to deal with clients.  In other words, there are some people that do not want to go to college. It is even harder to find a job without attending university because the person has dedicated even more to their jobs to be financial stable. (it sounds to me here that you are arguing against your own ideas! Be careful.) Therefore, a dedicated person that works very hard can easly find a job withouth going to college.

Vanessa,

Your two first arguments are quite sound, but your third one seems to be a litle lost in its ideas. Here are your grades for this assignment: Content: 5/5. Structure (Organization)= 4.5/5, Vocabulary = 5/5, Grammar = 4.5/5, and Mechanics = 4/5.
