Dear Rick,
I’m also really excited about starting this course! As you may have already noticed, I enjoy writing a lot, since essays until big stories that I write for fun. I rather write in Portuguese than in English but I’ve already written some things in English too.
Bluntly speaking, I don’t think that I’m a good writer at all, either when writing in Portuguese or English, but I think I can improve it by working on my vocabulary, grammar and organization of ideas. At my point of view, for a person to be a good writer, it takes him/her more than just knowing all the structures of a language, the person needs to be inspired, focused on it and try to detach him/herself from everything. And I think that, for this, we just have to practice.
Sincerely,
Marina.
Dear Marina,
It is always a pleasure for a writing teacher to have students who enjoy writing. It makes our job much easier.
Also, I agree with you that writing requires inspiration most of the time, but there are certain situations in our working lives that we cannot have the luxury to wait until inspiration strikes.
In this course, you will have to write on the spot so that you get used to putting your thoughts on paper even when you are not very inspired in a cohesive and coherent manner. Also, as far as vocabulary and grammar goes, we need to focus on other more important issues first before we can actually deal with those two areas. In the beginning of the course, we will be working a lot on organization and development of ideas so that your writing becomes more American like.
Truely,
Rick
